An Alphabet for The Land Workshop forms part of an exhibition at the Swiss Architecture Museum anticipating the realization of the workshop building at The Land, a self-sustaining environment emerging from an artistic community founded by Rirkrit Tiravanija and Kamin Lertchaiprasert in Thailand. Reflecting the communal building of a structure that comprises studios, workshop space, and shelter designed by Frankfurt-based architects Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Muller, an alphabet of twenty-six characters was collectively assembled in a process that mirrors the Surrealist game “exquisite corpse.” Each contributor provided individual letters in the form of drawings, found letters and photographs, which was later translated by type designer Radim Peško into a drawn system. As a collective work, it begins with a single contribution and continues to grow. Never finished, never complete, as an organic entity, it knows no endgame.

We also designed the accompanying publication, which was edited by Nikolaus Hirsch and Michel Muller with contributions from Ed Atkins, Nico Dockx, Jimmie Durham, Jesko Fezer, Liam Gillick, Juan Gaitan, Joseph Grigely, Joan Jonas, Chus Martínez, Molly Nesbit, Raqs Media Collective, Hu Fang, Zak Kyes, Radim Peško, Maria Lind, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Att Poomtangon and Tomas Scarceno.
