Edited by Berlin-based architect, critic and author Markus Miessen, The Violence of Participation extends Miessen’s installation at the 2007 Lyon Biennial to introduce a mix of interlocutors (including Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rem Koolhaas) who question the friction of collaborative practice and participation, specifically in the context of democratic Europe. A number of interventions enabled us to visually represent this tension. The editing process is visualised in an essay by Hans Ulrich Obrist while a series of dossiers upsets the book’s pacing. A postscript of additional notes written by an invited critic forms an in-text meta-narrative, and in the back section, drawings made by visitors at the Lyon Biennale reveal personal spatial perceptions of Europe – from literal depictions to a list of Ryanair destinations. The Violence of Participation marked the studio’s first book published with Sternberg Press, as well as the first project of many with the author.
