By questioning what is lost or gained between the written and the spoken, Translated By began as an exhibition that gathered and recorded the works of eleven literary writers, which visitors played through personal audio guides. Our design for the accompanying book comprised of the original texts expands on the mystery of translation; by employing traditional paperback-binding techniques with uncut paper, the volume is readable only when its pages are individually sliced open, thus challenging the meaning of engagement and comprehension – so much so that the British Library, upon receiving the book, returned it to us with a note claiming the book to be defective. A Turkish language edition including additional contributions was published by SALT to mark the exhibition opening in Istanbul.
